How to validate and format JSON safely
Find syntax errors, make nested data readable, minify only when needed, and verify that values survive the round trip.

Validate before changing the data
Valid JSON requires double-quoted property names and strings, balanced brackets, and no trailing commas. Formatting changes whitespace, not the underlying values, so a formatter is useful for exposing structure without redesigning the payload.
When an error appears, start near the reported location but also inspect the previous line. A missing comma or quote can make the parser notice the problem later than it began.
Use {"status":"draft","status":"final"} as a destructive-edge-case test. Although JavaScript's standard parser would keep only the final value, this workspace's bounded scanner reports the duplicate key so the loss is visible. Rename or remove one key before formatting.
For an exact successful fixture, paste {"name":"Kai","active":true,"items":[1,2]} with 2-space indentation. The expected lines contain name Kai, active true, and an items array with 1 and 2 on separate indented lines. Minifying that formatted output must return the exact one-line input.

Use minification deliberately
Minification removes unnecessary whitespace. It can reduce a text payload, but it does not compress it and does not conceal its contents. Keep readable formatting for review and debugging; minify a copy only where a compact representation is useful.
Never treat Base64 as encryption. It is a reversible encoding for transporting bytes or text through systems that expect text.
Tools used in this section
- Text Base64 โ Encode or decode Unicode text locally.
- File Base64 โ Create or restore Base64 data for files locally.
A safer debugging routine
- Remove credentials, tokens, personal data, and production records from examples.
- Validate the smallest payload that still reproduces the problem.
- Format it and inspect nesting and value types.
- Correct syntax before investigating application-level behavior.
- Test the corrected payload in a non-production environment.
- Copy the formatted output and parse it again. Confirm array lengths, null values, booleans, and identifiers. Keep identifiers above JavaScript's safe integer range quoted as strings; formatting cannot recover digits already rounded by a parser.
